Getting to Know Tanya
Meet Tanya Visser, one of SA’s most popular gardening celebrities. Full of fun, gardening knowledge and ideas as well as passionate about the environment, Tanya is somebody you want to know!!
Most gardeners reading this blog will know who Tanya Visser is. Blonde and exuberant with an infectious laugh, cheeky grin and a wicked sense of humour. If you are that person who does not know Tanya, we highly recommend you get to know her, you are in for a treat. She regularly shares her plant and garden knowledge through talks and events as well as on TV.
All are hugely popular and will have you laughing out loud. Her live talks involve lots of audience participation, a lot of humour and will leave you wanting more. The sight of her in her garden with her fur kids following behind has become a favourite within the South African gardening community.
Alongside all of this, Tanya is editor of The Gardener/Die Tuinier and Grow to Eat magazines and heads up the Lonehill Media Company; all of which survived the Covid Pandemic due to hard work, determination and that touch of Tanya magic. Tanya has also been president of the South African Nursery Association and leads the team that brings you The Garden Show, the Autumn Garden Show, and the Garden Carnival.
Tanya and partner Izolda van der Merwe have been working hard on their spectacular garden in Assagay, KwaZulu-Natal, for its second Kloof Conservancy Open Gardens. We hope you managed to seize the chance to take a look for yourself and to be inspired.
Their 4-acre property near Hillcrest, where she has lived for 14 years, has beautiful views over the valley. This background sets the scene for delightfully landscaped gardens, with gravel pathways leading from one distinct and interesting garden area to another. Manicured lawns edged with beds of flowering annuals and carefully selected feature plants and focal points, amaze and wow the visitor. A huge variety of plants are tended to with love and attention to detail, resulting in a garden that thrives. Rose gardens, edible gardens, tunnels of Tanya’s late mother’s anthuriums, succulent houses,
Izolda’s humid and evocative tropical greenhouse with ferns and bromeliads, grass gardens, hidden benches and places to rest, gracefully lead from one magical moment to another. This garden is a true work of Art.
Tanya and EcoBuz
Tanya has a longstanding love affair with nature and our environment. Her partnership with EcoBuz came about with the merger of 2 like-minded entities. Tanya uses the EcoBuz, environmentally friendly, natural, and of course fur kid friendly, products in her garden. After her garden was recently demolished by a monumental hailstorm (during the lead-up to the open garden event!), Tanya immediately applied the range of EcoBuz products, to jumpstart growth, recovery and fight off fungal infections.
“After the hail, I used Root Pro and MultiGro to get the garden back into condition for visitors. I applied both these products three days after the hail, and MultiGro weekly thereafter, as a foliar spray. It made a huge difference! The roses are looking magnificent, as though there never was a hailstorm, and people who saw the garden straight after the hail and again 4 weeks later, could not believe it. I take my hat off to the folk and scientists at EcoBuz – they really do know what they’re doing!”
Luckily EcoBuz will be visiting Tanya, her fur friends and her garden monthly for updates and tips. We will see what she is planting and how she keeps her garden looking so good all year round. Watch this space for Tanya’s Gardening News.
