PLANT HEALTH & EcoBuz

Across the globe, increased attention and interest is being placed on overall health and wellness. Trends have shifted from simply ‘looking’ good to ‘feeling’ good. Being fit, strong and active – both physically and emotionally, is a growing priority for us all. With the rampant spread of diseases such as cancer – the value of health cannot (and is no longer) underestimated.

Plant Health echoes this conversation.

Healthy strong plants will always be prized over weak, struggling ones. As with human health, continued research and significant developments are continuously being made in plant science. As knowledge of the many growth processes increase, so too does the research and development on tailoring products to maximise each step.

So … what have we learned and what do we as gardeners need to know about Plant Health.

In nature, plants predominantly need water and sunlight to survive. They are reliant on nutrients within the soil, air and water for nutrition and grow as best they can within their environment. As such nutrient rich soils support enhanced growth when compared to sandy poor soils – hence earlier discussions and emphasis on the importance of Soil Health.

Mankind has been supplementing plant nutrition since the beginning of time. Early Egyptian, Roman and Babylonian records suggest minerals and manure have enhanced farm productivity since ancient times. Gardeners are well aware of the benefits of supplementing nutrition. Some of us are more knowledgeable than others and as with most things in gardening, everyone experiences different success and failure at some stage in time.

As responsible gardeners it’s important to embrace an integrated, holistic approach to plant health, supplementing nutrition with products that are sustainable and effective, with no negative effects on your soil, your plants and your family.

 in 3 easy steps

  1. HUMIGRO – Builds Soil

    • ‘Soil food’, enriches and conditions soil
  2. STARTGRO – Initiates Growth

    • Supports early growth phases ie. apply at planting and transplanting
  3. MULTIGRO – Boosts Vitality

    • ‘All-in-one’ vitality package, enhances flowering and overall plant health

HUMIGRO

BUILDING SOIL

For decades gardeners have focused on plant nutrition and health, however the real conversation starts with SOIL HEALTH.

In nature, soils are continuously enriched by degradation and decomposition of fallen plant material. Microbes abound in this environment resulting in a vital, living eco-system that sustains and optimizes plant growth.

Adding fertiliser to soil addresses the nutritional needs of plants but DOES NOT support the health and structure of the soil.

HUMIGRO ‘feeds’ the soil, not the plant

THE SCIENCE BEHIND HUMIGRO

HUMIGRO is a valuable CARBON-based soil conditioner.

Humate granules are produced from extracts of ancient Leonardite deposits, formed from the long-term breakdown of prehistoric vegetative matter.

This unique material is a rich source of carbon and complex nutritional elements, with valuable soil conditioning properties.

Soil-organic carbon forms the basis of soil fertility.

Carbon:

  • releases nutrients for plant growth
  • feeds beneficial micro-organisms
  • promotes soil structure
  • buffers against harmful substances

Which positively impacts the biological and physical SOIL HEALTH

The benefits of HUMIGRO:

  • Reduces leaching & nutrient lock up, keeping nutrients available in the soil for longer (i.e. improves fertiliser sustainability)
  • Reduces the negative effects of fertiliser on soil & buffers fertiliser applications
  • Is a natural microbial stimulant, especially of fungi, which is often deficient due to use of fungicides
  • Improves soil structure, soil moisture & nutrient retention

Lets ‘unpack’ the negative effects of chemical fertilisers:

  • Chemical fertilisers have transformed agriculture in their quest to maximising production.
  • Their role is to increase nutrient levels and it is a job that they do well.
  • However, the continuous & prolonged use of synthetic fertilisers contributes to the ‘problem’ of poor SOILS.
  • Poor soils are less able to ‘hold nutrients’, which results in more frequent fertiliser applications. This cycle needs to be broken.

HUMIGRO aids in addressing and mitigating some of these negative impacts by building soil health in the long term.

Directions for use – HUMIGRO

HUMIGRO sachet = 5g = 1 teaspoon (provided)

Apply during bed preparation and at planting. Thereafter, apply as regularly as needed to boost and promote soil health.

  • Dilute 5g HUMIGRO into 5L water. Mix well and apply as drench to soil
  • HUMIGRO may also be mixed with fertiliser at a rate of 50g per kg
  • Or sprinkle directly onto soil, 50 g per m2

HUMIGRO is a natural product and will not burn or harm the soil if over applied.

HumiGro contains humic acid – Reg No B 5462, Act 36 of 1947. Madumbi Sustainable Agriculture (Pty) Ltd, Postnet Suite 20, Private Bag X6011, Hilton 3245Reg. No. 2009/020798/07.

STARTGRO

INITIATING GROWTH

STARTGRO supports plant growth when it’s needed the most – at planting & transplanting. Ensuring the correct nutrition at this critical stage improves overall long term plant vitality.

‘Early growth’ refers to the ‘initial triggering’ of growth, ie. At germination, after transplanting, growth flushes preceding flowering, fruit set etc.

In agriculture, the maize plant sets its maximum yield potential within the first 7 days. Likewise, in gardening, the first 7 days of both annuals and perennial plants are regarded as CRITICAL GROWTH periods.

STARTGRO is specifically blended for use during early growth phase

THE SCIENCE BEHIND STARTGRO

The most significant unique selling point (USP) of STARTGRO is that unlike most foliar feeds it contains no N,P or K.

As seen in the typical analysis of STARTGRO, this liquid formulation contains a balanced, complex of plant micro-nutrients.

STARTGRO is specifically designed for early growth periods, containing the nutrients, amino acids and growth regulators most vital to early growth.

Growers who simply feed plants N, P and K shortcut the ‘BIOCHEMICAL SEQUENCE OF NUTRITION IN PLANTS’.

Biochemically, plant nutrition starts with:

1 – Boron (B)

2 – Silica (Si)

3 – Calcium (Ca)

The B, Si, Ca complex ‘kick starts’ growth allowing N, P, K and others to be available.

In summary the BIOCHEMICAL SEQUENCE OF NUTRITION works as follows:

  1. Strong SAP PRESSURE (Boron) enhanced by
  2. STRENGTHENED CELL WALLS (Silica) leads to
  3. Good NUTRIENT TRANSPORT (Calcium)

This allows optimal cell division & photosynthesis to occur, the foundation of plant growth Calcium then binds with Nitrogen (4), Magnesium (5), Phosphorous (6), Carbon (7) and Potassium (8).

More on the Si, Ca & B complex:

  • Calcium (Ca) the ‘trucker’ of all nutrients:

Calcium ‘carries’ nutrients through the plant improving overall plant growth. Ca is immobile so a continuous supply is essential.

  • Boron (B) the ‘truck driver’:

Boron creates sap pressure – essential for nutrient uptake (B & Ca work closely together). Without Boron healthy plant growth can’t start. Boron leaches easily, also N & K are antagonistic towards B making Boron commonly lacking in garden soils.

  • Silica (Si) strengthens cell walls:

Resulting plants are stronger, less susceptible to drought, heat, pests & diseases. (Essential in a water-wise, heat tolerant garden)

Directions for use – STARTGRO

STARTGRO sachet = 5ml = 1 capful

Apply at transplanting of seedlings or planting of pots, and monthly thereafter. Also recommended for application after germination.

  • Dilute 5ml STARTGRO into 5L water. Mix well and apply as DRENCH to soil
  • For FOLIAR APPLICATIONS mix 20ml per 1L water into a knapsack sprayer. Agitate well and apply

STARTGRO contains a blend of organic and inorganic nutrients, it will not burn or harm plants if over applied

StartGro contains potassium, sulphur, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, iron, silica, copper, molybdenum and boron – Reg No B 5465, Act 36 of 1947. Madumbi Sustainable Agriculture (Pty) Ltd, Postnet Suite 20, Private Bag X6011, Hilton 3245Reg. No. 2009/020798/07.
